We were recently asked on Episode 35 about coffee beers that actually taste like coffee. Apparently, one of our listeners had trouble finding beers which deliver on their promise of effusing those roasty and bitter flavors. It was a pretty easy question to answer with beers like Bell’s Java Stout, Green Flash’s Cosmic Ristretto, Founder’s Breakfast Stout, and Pizza Boy’s Sunny Side Up out there. I personally found it harder to try and think of a beer that wasn’t good on the coffee flavor.
Thankfully, Jackie O’s Java the Stout reminded me only a few days after we recorded that episode. Like the special editions releases of the original trilogy, this beer is ill-conceived and disappointing. It doesn’t seem to quite get anything right and was a real struggle to get through just one can.
The stout itself is lacking, and that’s pretty much all you’ll taste since the coffee flavor is mostly non-existent. Something about the beer just tastes off. It’s incredibly unbalanced between the small amount of roasted barely and mostly caramel malt grain bill. And there’s an unpleasant bitterness about it, too.
The bitterness, though, isn’t to be confused with the natural bitterness of coffee, though. The coffee doesn’t show up until the back end and lingers somewhat on the after taste. It’s very muted and rather pointless after how deterring the stout is. Like seeing a trailer for The Phantom Menace after watching Attack of the Clones
I had really high hopes for this beer too. With The Last Jedi on the horizon, I was hoping I could use this in a pairing guide for the new Star Wars film. Also, just wanted to have something for myself as a lover of both stouts and coffee beers.
