3 Daughters Brewing is out to prove the headline’s adage with the A-Wake Coffee Blonde Ale. The St. Petersburg, Florida brewery has decided to take the ‘fun in the sun’ route in their entry into the coffee beer arena. Unlike most beers with a coffee flavor, the A-Wake is light and well suited for a full day on the fishing boat. Being from Florida, and a blonde ale, this makes total sense.
An ABV of 5.0% certainly lends to this beer’s all day drinkability, as does a nice balance of flavors. The A-Wake only has 23 IBUs in the hop’s corner, but still has a nice crispness to accompany the malts. This balancing act does not, however, carry over to the coffee. The nose on this beer is far and away coffee. It has a very forward coffee aroma, but that does not by any means mean that it is overpowering. The big coffee notes does carry over to the taste, but it more or less falls in line with the malts and hop flavors of the rest of the recipe. Not that that’s a bad thing. If the goal of the A-Wake is to be your all day companion, they have the flavor approach spot on. Instead of the astrophysicist billionaire swimsuit model that every high schooler dreams of one day meeting, the A-Wake is much more the cute girl in Legal that always has fascinating stories from a weekend spend doing whatever it is that cute girls in Legal with fascinating stories do. The more you sit down with this beer, the more you enjoy it. Admittedly, the first sip or two in, I was not enthralled. I think the disparity between the coffee nose and the coffee flavor threw me off. I wanted more coffee flavor. By the end of the beer, everything settled in just right, and I don’t believe that more coffee flavor would have added to the beer at all.
Bottom line time, is the A-Wake Coffee Blonde Ale by 3 Daughters Brewing worth picking up a single can, a six pack, or a case? Although I do enjoy this beer, it certainly doesn’t set the world on fire. I don’t think that’s the point though. So this weekend, throw a six pack of A-Wake Coffee Blonde Ale cans by 3 Daughters in your fishing cooler, take off for the spot you haven’t been to in way too long, and produce a fascinating story for the cute girl in Legal on Monday.

(Steve's Note: I too had this beer. I give it 3 Heather Locklears in Return of Swamp Thing out of 5 Pam Andersons in Barb Wire)
